The only meatless BBQ Pork in the county
Monday, July 12, 2010

|
Growing up with a monthly chinese family dinner, my veganism has left me yearning for bbq pork. thankfully, loving hut offers what i believe to be the only meatless bbq pork in the county and it is very delicious. the texture and bright red color are very reminiscent of the unmistakable asian meat i remember. the flavor is good enough to make this the only thing i order here. however, i do recommend trying their delicious and bright colored drinks. i always get a kiwi one that is refreshing and unique.

The consistency of the soy chicken was impressive

For some reason my husband and I have driven past this small store front dozens of times without thinking to eat here. After spending the evening at the Norton-Simon, we were looking for a nearby vegan restaurant and decided to give it a shot. I ordered the Pumpkin, Eggplant, Tofu (PET) and my husband got the Orange "Chicken." Both dishes were delicious. PET is a bit spicy, but with a Thai Iced Tea to chase the spicier bites, it was perfect. The Orange "Chicken" was a bit sweet for my taste, but the consistency of the soy chicken was impressive (better than most fake meat).

This place is a good crossover for vegetarians
Saturday, June 26, 2010

This place doesn't scream vegetarian from the outside, but then again the location isn't really that noticeable (behind a car wash). The food is good for a vegan restaurant, and having just come back from living in Taiwan for half a year and often frequented their locations in Taipei, it's a bit pricey (or rather, it's insanely cheap in Taiwan). Their menu, however, is quite expansive and has a good variety of Asian and western food. Their rose lemonade is delish, and my favorite entree is the pho, though I can't stand the fake fish balls since it tastes way too real for me and I can't stand eating anything fishy. Their spicy burrito was pretty good too, but a bit on the dry side so it could've had some salsa (not pico de gallo, which they give you) on the side. Next time I go, I'm hoping to try their vermicelli and royal noodle.
I'm also not a vegetarian, as I oh-so-love-my-beef, but I do quite often eat vegetarian food, and feel this place is a good crossover for vegetarians and people who are open to trying vegetarian food.

You can't help but feel upbeat and happy!!

I'm going to put this out right now. I'm all about meat. I love it and nothing can replace it. But then I came across this place. Loving Hut is an adorable place where the walls are yellow. You can't help but feel upbeat and happy.
The food is good and you don't get the heavy feeling afterwards. I tried the spaghetti and the bun hue (sp? it's the middle option of the noodle soup section). I was expecting the spaghetti marinara sauce to be watery like how it is in most Asian restaurants, but it was thick and flavourful. The waitress suggested I try to bun hue because it's one of their specialities. Trust me, this is something you want to try. It's a little spicy for those that cant handle spicy. Each dish is about $6-9, which isn't too bad.
The waitress was very friendly and attentive. I want to try their other dishes now.

Loving Hut Let your imagination run wild!

Been driving past this place with a big smile and snicker... heh "Loving Hut" let your imagination run wild! =D Got lunch here with a vegetarian friend, since I'm a omnivore I probably wouldn't have chosen this place on my own. The prices not bad for vegan food, an average of $8 for dishes.
The white tables and pale yellow walls give this place a very clean and cheery look. I don't know about the huge sign thing on the ceiling, it looks like it should belong on a wall outside. WTH why is it there? Another odd looking thing is their chocolate chip cookies. It's like the baker has OCD and counted the chocolate chips for each cookie and arranged them symmetrically and evenly spaced... hmm.
There seems to be mixed reviews about this place, but what I had was delicious. Our waitress did forget we ordered a pot of green tea, but they extremely nice about it when we reminded her. All in all service was nice and food didn't take too long to come out. I am impressed at how flavourful the sans animal dishes were. Especially impressed with my friend's order of Shrimp Chow Mein, I had imitation crab before but it's made from fish. This imitation shrimp has the spooky chewy consistency of real shrimp and flavor... vegan magic!
I was also impressed with the imitation meat in my order of Golden Rolls and Teriyaki Vermicelli, you can almost see a 'meat' muscle pattern, the sauce tasted authentic too. Leave it to the Asians to come up with a convincing knock-off. ;) This is a lunch special item, so for the same price as their regular vermicelli I get bonus crispy egg rolls!! (no egg...it's vegan) =p
You can get a good mindf**k from the food served here, but they still can't beat my meat! If this place really wanted to encourage "Go Green and Save the Planet" maybe they can promote a cult of cannibalism to keep the population down. totally j/k anyways there's already HUFU (human tofu) to curb that appetite.

I grew up in Alhambra, though have moved out of county, and to have a vegan restaurant here makes me so happy when I come back to visit! Did I mention a GOOD vegan restaurant? Mmm.
The prices are fair. The food is good. I ordered the Happy BBQ, and it was so yummy. That's my go to I guess.
The service was friendly but not as attentive as I'd expect. The place itself is like the other Loving Huts, but I always enjoy dining in :) I love to bring friends here to try some thing new if they're open to it, and they usually enjoy it too.

This may be a good place to try a vegan experience!

This was my first time going to a vegan restaurant. Two of my friends had mentioned this was a pretty good place and so it got me curious. Since I'm not vegan, I can only compare these dishes from a non-vegan pallet.
Although the char-siu dish looks LOOKS AND ALMOST TASTES LIKE THE REAL CHA-SUI, it wasn't one of the best dishes there. I had the kabob dish and this dish was pretty good. I really liked the taste and while it was pretty darn close to tasting and looking like meat. And we also also had the rice noodle dish with "beef" and rolls. It had a sauce which complemented it quite nicely. No strong spices, just a tint of flavor...mild and light. It's perfect for a light lunch. I would have the say the prices are a bit expensive given the size of the dish but I suppose it may be worth it for vegans who just want a darn good meal! The size is perfect for girls (I finished my plate and taste other dishes) but guys would probably need to order 2 dishes.
The place is quaint...it's got white tables and chairs and a happy shade of yellow walls. So it's welcoming. We went on a Saturday for lunch around 1:30 and there 2 guys waiting on tables. They weren't too cognizant with the customers and it took a while to get their attention so we can order, or get more water, or just to get the check. If you're in the area and curious about vegan flood, this may be a good place to try a vegan experience.

I tried the burger as a baseline to other vegetarian burgers I've had in the past and it faired better. Then I nibbled on a few pieces of my friend's "teriyaki chicken" on a skewer and was taken aback by its wonderful taste and texture. It was very convincing. Then I washed it all down with a couple of their fruit drinks. I was sold...
In a community moreso known for greasy, mediocre, fast food Chinese food slopped on plates, this establishment is a godsend.

I'm coming back for dessert!
Sunday, February 28, 2010
|
|
Of course, I had to try their most popular dish, THE SPICY CHA CHA! The name in itself makes it worth trying. It was not so spicy, but full of cha cha if that makes any sense. Haha...these little shrimp-like creatures were so perfectly breaded. Usually, fried foods hurt my throat, but this didn't have that effect. Perhaps, they bake it or something.
The yellow noodles of the Wonton Noodle soup appeared wide and thick. I usually like my noodles thin, but this is an exception! They were oh so soft! The broth looked a bit oily, but it was well seasoned.
The Happy Barbecue dish had soy protein bits that were also in the soup. For that reason, this dish was not exciting for me. It didn't get my cha cha's going. The sauce had the right tanginess to it.
My mom wanted the pina colada which was nothing too special. I'd rather have the real thing. Bwahaha...but all the other drinks sure look good! A side cafe would be a nice addition. Add free wi-fi and I'd be here every weekend.
I'm coming back for dessert! ...once lent is over...

If all vegan food tasted like this, I MIGHT just go herbivore
Saturday, February 27, 2010

|
If all vegan food tasted like this, I MIGHT just go herbivore. My friend got the vermicelli and the soy meat tasted exactly like the pork you'd get at Vietnamese restaurants. It came with flour noodles, which was kind of weird, but overall the flavor was pretty spot on. I got the Guru's curry which isn't that exciting, just tofu and potatoes. Another friend got the Happy BBQ (the red meat aka char sui from Hong Kong BBQ places) that didn't taste like what it's suppose to, but it was decent enough. Best part of the meal was the fried tofu appetizer. mmmm smushy crispy crust tofu.
Desserts were gross. I don't care what you put, but any desert with the absence of milk and eggs just tastes offensive.

I don't have a problem making decisions at most restaurants. Cuz I'm veg, there's usually only one or two things I can eat. However, the Hut's menu was positively teeming with deliciousness. I was so overwhelmed by indecision, I couldn't even order a drink or dessert. Sorry about that.
That was all just as well, because my guy and I were stuffed after our meal of Spicy Cha-Cha (Insert joke here), Au Lac Special Salad, Pho, and Golden Roll. We even had enough for a midnight snack. Spicy Cha-Cha was indeed spicy. Our fave was def the Au Lac Special Salad. I wish we'd ordered two.
The gentleman who waited on us was really lovely. The place was clean and bright. My belleh was so full of love when I exited the doors, I could see how this place got its name.

True innocent childlike love
Thursday, January 21, 2010
|

Innocence. It's the only excuse for naming a place "Loving Hut". And you know what? I'll go with it.
No, it's not a brothel or a Vietnamese bikini coffee bar. It's not a massage parlor or anything else you are thinking. In fact, if you are thinking that, you may not be Loving Hut material.
Loving Hut is in every sense of the word, a place to share your love of the environment, of animals, of people. True innocent childlike love.
We happened upon this place with the Yelp app while driving around in Alhambra on a random quest for food. My lovely eating partner is a vegetarian, and that means I will be consuming with my conscience on. And I always feel better about it, so that's good.
And then hey, we're two blocks from the "Loving Hut", damn "there it is!"
So we pull over and stroll on in. Gentle, gentle gentle is the vibe.
Cold day, rainy day, soup day. Let me tell you that their wonton pho is great. Maybe pig bones haven't been soaked in the broth, but their wontons are out of this world. Everyone raves about the "beef" chow mein, so I give it a try. Man! This "beef" is about as close to real as I need it to be - and without the heavy conscience (hey I know that's just me, no judgement on you people - don't even start cursing the vegetarians, let's keep this nicey nicey).
The noodles were a bit oily. And flat screens...there are two. What's up, my fellow masticator noticed, with flat screens at veggie joints?. Heck, I don't know.
And can I tell you that the fake pork slices are soooo close to the real thing? I know, the cynics out there are shaking their heads. It's cool, I know I'm a tree hugger. I also eat the critters even though I don't feel good about it.
In the windows are some framed pics with quotes about saving the planet and going green. I really can't argue with it. Maybe you can. That's cool. Don't hate.
I'll be back.

When i sat in the second time, the waiter constantly came and refilled my water and made sure everything was ok. He was very nice and the food was served quickly. Their food reminded me of Veggie Era in Upland, except they have more desserts and the service is much better. I'll for sure be eating here regularly.

Woah..the foods are great, healthy and very very...delicious. 5 Stars.
However, I believe there is one thing LovingHut owners overlook and that is the price. I see that the price is higher compare to other meat serving restaurants; and this does not reflect well when you try to encourage other to be Veg.
I learned from watching Master Ching Hai seminar and her online suprememasterTV that she and her ppl are working tirelessly and unconditionally to bring awareness to the people around the world to be Veg and Green to save the planet. Kudo and great work! Talk to talk and walk to walk and therefore Master Ching Hai encourages her ppl to open and franchising Loving Hut around the word. But what many LovingHut had have been overlook is "what is the purpose of having these franchise vegan restaurants" everywhere. I don't think it for business and profit. No? Isn't it the answer is to encourage other to go VEG. Is not that the intention of Master Ching Hai?
The main point I would like to constructively add here is that "If YOU WANT OTHER TO BE VEG..OR EAT VEG and save the planet..THAN YOU HAVE TO LET YOURSELF BE DIFFERENCE in price, services, taste...from the many other traditional nonveg restaurants.
And yes..I know...you would say, "what about the overhead cost and expenses. Who and how will we pay for those?" I believe that LovingHut will do great and strong in many. It is not only quality, but also quantity. The best form of advertisement is "word of mouth" from a friend to friends.
But, the reality is there, as meat-eaters, some of us know that being veg is healthy and good for our health. But when time is tough, we have to be realistic and see what in our wallet. The nature of human being is selfish and self center, not self realization. As a nonveg eater, if vegan cuisine is more expensive than tradition food, I rather go and eat the traditional food which most of us (meat eater) would do. Why, because it cheap and we love the taste of meat or sea food. A meat hamburger is only $2.99, but a vegan burger is over $6.00, as a meat eater, which one would you buy? Thanks to suprememasterTV, I become more conscious of my environment and how I should live my life. It helps me change and shape my thinking. So, let think about it and I hope my input would recourse the way and the purpose of LovingHut.

One of LA's best Vegan places!!!

I agree.. it is WOW! Pretty darn tasty and good. This is the Asian RFD!
I came w/ my meat loving sister and her best friend and they absolutely loved the place too. She didn't even miss the meat and was surprised and how good all the dishes we ordered were.
We got the Bliss Chow Mein- it had amazing veggies and thin soft slices of soy protein that totally reminded you of slices of beef. But its NOT!! It was a well seasoned dish and huge!! Just deliciousness... I'm drooling as I write all this down...
We also ordered the Sea of LOVE.. .that definitely got a Sea of Love from us!!! It was the best dish of the night. It was an appetizer of enoki mushrooms that has been wrapped around seaweed and fried to look like Calamari but it is soooooo DAMN good with this awesome creamy vegan dipping sauce. The enoki mushrooms also had a small piece of ginger and veggie ham in it.. that really made the dish. .the ginger. Sooo goood!. Then we also ordered The Queens Lunch. It was a simple soy protein fillet that was pan fried and had some gravy over it .. sort of reminded us of simple roasted chicken breast with pan sauces on it.. it was soo good too..
All the dishes were great and tasty and we also ordered their drinks. We got the Lychee shake, Mango Shake and I got the Rose Lemonade.. the best drink i think I've ever had. So subtle the rose flavor and the Lemonade part... EXCELLENT. right amount of sweet and tart..
Overall we finished everything to the last drop! We demolished this meal.. it was sooo goood. And even though we stuffed ourselves full.. we did not feel gross afterward..
Overall please please give this place a try .. I'll say.. one of LA's best Vegan places!!! Next time I go back.. I need to order dessert... we were too full for it this time. But I'll definitely be back again .. This place totally Rules!! I'm so hungry right now just thinking about it..

can i say WOW? i've been trying out the vegan/vegetarian places which seem to be sprouting up as of late. i lunched with my bff's on a saturday and i can't believe i can say that i didn't miss animal meat because the food was just that good and close, to the real thing. this what we had:
spring rolls: i didn't notice the difference between real shrimp and fake shrimp (i think this was made from yams). came with a yummy peanutty sauce.
burritos: flavorful and a little caliente!
wonton noodle soup: pretty good though i don't think the char siu was all that and doubt i'll order a char siu by itself.
asia paradise (looks like fake chicken breast and it was my choice): a little disappointed with this dish. this one was the least meat like.
fried rice: wow! this is probably the best dish out of all 'em. so flavorful and it seemed like i was eating meat.
spicy cha cha: reminds me so much of spicy salty shrimp except i don't have to sit and peel off the messy shells.
prices are very reasonable. for all this food, it was only $11/person plus tip for 5 people. i am looking very forward to the next time i visit!!!

Loving Hut's Alhambra location is clean, pleasant, and friendly. The staff were very helpful, and my food arrived fairly quickly. This place is not fast food by any stretch - it's interesting, flavorful Asian and other fare.
The chicken drumstick appetizer was crisp, and was served with a tangy sauce on the side. The Pho dishes were great, and the beverages were amazing. I had a cold Lychee shake, and my dining companion had a hot rose-flavored tea, both of which were delicate and delicious.

I absolutely LOVE about this place !!

This lil gem tops my list for awesome vegan bites.
** PARKING ** There is parking in the back as well as street parking.
** GO GREEN MESSAGE ** What I absolutely LOVE about this place is that they don't shy away from saying they are a VEGAN restaurant. They have a flat screen tv that plays (suprememastertv.com) that broadcasts a message about going green, global warming, saving the planet, etc. A harsh but necessary reality. I don't think everyone will jive with this . . . but I like the message here. Two green thumbs from me! :)
I do like that even on their receipts, it says to Go Veg, Be Green. More green messages are framed up in the bathroom.
** DRINKS ** MANGO SHAKE (mango deliciousness)
What I thought: Well presented mango-liciousness. I wouldn't necessarily call it a "shake" as they do as it is a thin, smooth drink, not thick and creamy like a typical shake. It's well-chileld, comes with ice cubes and topped with some dried flowers (chrysanthemums?). SO GOOD! I've been back multiple time since just to order this drink.
ROSE LEMONADE (exactly what the name says)
What I thought: My cousin is the one that ordered this drink and it is very very pretty. It's just lemonade with a hint of rose (rosewater?), sprinkled with pretty dried pink flowers on top. Tastes fine and is pretty to look at. It's not necessarily something I'd order and it's not on the same caliber as that mango-liciousness.
** FOOD ** My cousin and I shared the following items:
JOLLY RICE (steamed purple rice with soy chicken, sprinkled with roasted sesame seed, roasted seaweed, cucumber, lettuce, sauce)
What I thought: Extremely tasty! The rice is white rice from Thailand which they then naturally color it with beet. The soy chicken was DELICIOUS but I wished they would include more pieces. I say that not because they skimp on the quantity but because it was super yummy. ;)
TERIYAKI KABOB (grilled sauteed soy protein on skewer sticks with rice)
What I thought: SO GOOD! I typically don't eat fake meat but this was divine. This really did taste like thin strips of beef. Marinated with a nice teriyaki sauce and topped with sesame seeds. My cousin (carnivore) also thought it also tasted like beef initially but after a few bites she did say that you can tell it's not meat. It's bee awhile since I had beef so to me it did taste like it (from what I remember).
SEA OF LOVE (deep fried exotic mushrooms, soy protein, ginger, seaweed)
What I thought: Wonderfully prepared and interesting taste. They incorporated Japanese mushrooms with ginger and deep fried to a golden perfection. I'm typically not a ginger person but having that piece of ginger in there definitely completes this golden confection.
** SERVICE ** Friendly. =)
** DRAG ** They do use Styrofoam to-go containers, plastic bags and to-go plastic cups. I don't believe the plastic cups are made from corn syrup . . .
Enjoy the pics (courtesy of my wonderfully amazing though not so trusty iPhone.)

Wanted to go here for a long time, ever since a co-worker mentioned it. Me and two friends stopped by last weekend for lunch. It wasn't crowded at all. Service was quick and friendly. Parking on the street was easy.
We shared our food "family style". First up were the drinks. I got a Kumquat mixed drink, but they were out of kumquat syrup, so I got orange juice instead. It looked really pretty, but was not very tasty. It was rather expensive and tasted like orange juice with 7up. Oh well.
My friend got the rose petal tea. It looked great and she said it tasted wonderful. I will try that the next time!
Our food arrived quickly at our table. The Happy Barbecue was basically faux cha-siu (chinese roasted pork with the red glaze). Surprisingly nice texture and taste. I would order this dish again.
The Spicy Cha Cha was a popular item on the menu. It is fried yam flour and was supposed to simulate salted pepper shrimp. This was also really good and freshly made. The breading was crispy and it wasn't terribly spicy at all.
We got one of the lunch specials with vermicelli and fake beef, sort of like Vietnamese style cold vermicelli. It also came with egg rolls. It was pretty good, but the noodle/fake meat ratio was off. It could have used twice the amount of meat.
I think we got another dish, but I can't remember for the life of me what it was. :(
Overall, this place was pretty good, considering there was no meat or MSG to boost the flavor. Prices were fair, but serving sizes are smaller than what you would expect. And, most importantly, no one got food poisoning. Yes, I'd go here again if I'm in the area.

I love love LOVE it here! The food is delicious and the lunch special is a great price! The service is good and it's not too crowded (except during noon on weekends). The food takes a tad long to prepare, but it's well worth the wait!
I'm so glad Alhambra FINALLY has a vegan place. Plus, i love the cheery atmosphere!

Great place!!! Enjoyed every second of my visit and I'm not even vegan!
The place is pristine, the staff is exceptional and the food was a delight. I went with the classic pho since I was just getting over a cold but I'm looking forward to their other plates, they all looked very good.
I also love the fact that they very subtly distribute information on global warming and the impact of Big Food on our environment. Great place!

I am new to being vegetarian, so it has been pretty hard for me to obtain good food, without having to cook it myself. I found Loving Hut on yelp... and after reading a few of the reviews, I decided to try it.
The first time I went there was during my lunch break from work. The service was good, but it wasn't busy so I'd expect good service. They serve you water right after they give you the menu.
The food is DELICIOUS! My coworker ordered the curry and I ordered some time of vermicelli dry noodles with sauce? I dont remember the exact name, but both were excellent. I will definitely come back to try other dishes.
The restaurant is very nicely decorated and looks very clean. It's not too fancy and not too colorful, like those yogurt places. I like it.

One of the best vegan meals we've ever had!!!

i woke up on a sunday to overcast weather and a mad craving for asian noodle soup. i'd heard great things about this place, so my boyfriend and i decided to check it out for some late lunch...or linner.
perhaps it was the fact that we were both starving, but it was seriously one of the best vegan meals we've ever had!!! here's what we ordered:
sea of love $7.95 this was an appetizer of enoki mushrooms, vegan ham, and ginger wrapped in seaweed and deep fried...the end result meant to resemble squid. the dish came with sweet thousand island style dipping sauce...overall really good!
golden rolls and teriyaki vermicelli $7.95 typical vietnamese noodle bowl served with egg rolls, teriyaki "meat", vegetables and special sauce. another great dish and the best fake teriyaki beef we've ever had.
royal noodle (bue hue) $6.95 with the exception of pho, which i hate, i love me some good asian noodles in savory broth. no vegan dish has ever come close to replacing my old favorite daikokuya....until now!! while the noodles and tofu were not the absolute best i've had, the broth and shredded protein really hit the spot. after adding some mint and sriracha to the soup i was in heaven...so freakin good!!
tofu cheesecake often times i find that vegan crust tastes like a nutra grain bar....in otherwords gross! luckily that wasn't the case with this dessert...simply light, creamy and delicious!
rose capuccino the prettiest cup of coffee i've ever seen...a bit too sweet for my taste, but still pretty good.

I passed by this place so many times, but never knew what it was... "Loving Hut? What kind of yogurt, or boba, or massage place was this?" I thought. So, yesterday, my wife brings home a menu from this place and tells me that it's a vegan restaurant. I was like, "What?!" Being a vegetarian myself, and I've always enjoyed trying new vegetarian foods, I wanted to give it a try. Cheesy restaurant name, but why not give it a try, right?
The location of the restaurant is not the best. Even though it was on a busy/major street (Main St. in Alhambra, right across the old Edwards Cinema), there wasn't a parking lot for the restaurant in sight. We parked curbside and went in. (We later found out that the restaurant does have parking in the rear.)
The restaurant decor was decent. Ambiance and decor was not impressive, not bad either. It was strange to have their restaurant logo/signage attached onto the ceiling. Brightly lit, clean, and well-maintained were the first impressions. The menu design could've been better, with better photographs, entree names, etc. (I also found a typo in their 'restaurant introduction' - which usually conveys to me lack of quality or attention-to-detail), but nonetheless, it had a good variety of vegetarian dishes... Vietnamese soup noodles, Chinese dishes, Veggie Burger, Spicy Tacos... it was aiming to offer various cultural cuisines that are.... of course... Vegan!
We ordered three dishes and a dessert. (Yeah, we're pigs!) We ordered the Curry, Burger, Pho, and cheesecake. We weren't dissapointed! The food was delicious. The Curry was a little tangy and had a kick of tomato in it. The chunks of potatoes and tofu went well together and served with white steam rice, it was delicious. The Burger looked awesome! Definitely didn't look like a Veggie Burger. Served with fries, the Burger was flavorful - with sauteed Portobello mushrooms, lettuce, mayo, ketchup, sauteed onions, and some 'secret sauce/flavor' that we couldn't figure out. Again, the burger blew us away! It was delicious. As with the Pho Soup Noodles, it was a treat! The soup was flavorful and was very close to the taste of the traditional Beef stock soup in the regular Pho. The noodles could've been more 'al dente' but nonetheless, it was great. Loved it! Now with the cheesecake, we couldn't believe that it was completely vegan - with no dairy, cheese, or eggs! I still like the original New York Cheesecakes, but still... this was delicious and a healthy alternative.
The service was friendly and helpful. They could've had a dress code enforced to convey professionalism and quality - shirt and tie, same T-shirts... you know the drill.
In terms of overall design, it is pretty average. The design of the logo was too busy and difficult to read, and a little too cutesy. The chairs were white synthetic leather and the furnishings around the restaurant were average. Nothing special... no themes, no twists or surprises.
I am normally a picky eater, who is very particular about cleanliness, dining experience, service, food quality, and taste... and I give 'Loving Hut' a loving review... 4 stars! Close to 5 stars! Definitely not a high-end dining experience, but a nice, perfect, healthy casual dining experience! Highly recommended!

So nice to have another vegan restaurant in the area!
Wednesday, May 27, 2009

Yay! So nice to have another vegan restaurant in the area! Especially nice that it's not Thai. Don't get me wrong, I love vegan Thai food, but there are so many of them that it gets a little predictable. This seems to be Vietnamese inspired but definitely not a Vietnamese-cuisine restaurant. I think they only had one Pho dish.
The restaurant is brightly lit and very clean. They have 2 flat screens; one that shows Supreme Master TV and one that shows other stuff (in today's case, the Lakers game). They have their logo stuck to the roof... a little strange... but no big deal--- unless it falls on you!
Service is really fast and the waiters are very polite. We came right before the dinner rush; there were only a few other tables occupied. The restaurant is pretty big with plenty of seating.
The meals range from reasonably priced ($7) to pretty expensive ($11). The meals are filling, but most of them don't include rice. I would suggest serving rice with the dishes since they are very flavorful. We had the Queen's Lunch (pan-fried white soy protein with onions and garlic in house special sauce, served with white rice and salad - $7.95) and the Spicy Mambo (fried exotic mushrooms with garlic, spicy peppers, and onions - $10.95). The Queen's Lunch was very filling since it was a large piece of protein and included rice and salad. It was very flavorful, and definitely had the Vietnamese-vinegary taste). The Spicy Mambo tasted like spicy, fried scallops. They were delicious, but not served with rice. Rice would have been a great to include with the dish, but I took some from the Queen's Lunch so it worked out. Although very yummy, I thought it was a little expensive.
We also splurged and got the Golden Nuggets ($5.95) as our appetizer. These are 5 deep fried pieces of soy protein served with tartar sauce. We expected it to taste like other "nuggets", but instead tasted like fish sticks. Unexpected, but really good if you like fish sticks... in your mouth... (South Park, anyone?) I haven't had fish sticks in years, so these were a surprise!
We also ordered two specialty drinks. They are served in tall glasses and each is dusted with crushed flowers that match the color of the drink. I had the Pink Connection (strawberry "milk" shake - $3.50) and my boyfriend had the Lychee Paradise (lychee "milk shake - $3.50). Both really good, but on the small side.
To top it off, we decided on a slice of "cheesecake". The crust was great, and the texture was good. It was pretty sweet, but not overwhelming. I liked it a lot. I'm sure it's not cheap to make, but $3.95 for a tiny slice is a little much. At least it was yummy
Parking is plentiful on the street and free! The meters are one hour, but if you go after 6, you're golden.

The meat was AMAZING

I went there with a friend today and we enjoyed it. I got the Vermicelli. The sauce that came with it looked kind of like water with tiny bits of bell pepper, but that's definitely not what it was. It was some kind of spicy sauce that I dipped my rolls in and it was pretty good. The roles were crispy and were good, too. The meat was AMAZING, but I could have used more of it. There was lots of mint and noodles and less meat. Next time I'll have to go for something heavier.
My friend got the Jolly Rice. Not sure what was up with purple rice but it was GOOD! And the patties that came with it were VERY chicken-y. He's a major omni and said that it tasted, felt, and looked just like chicken nuggets. There are a million things on the menu I'd still like to try and it's pretty damn inexpensive for the huge portions, too! If only there was a closer location...

Get the Golden Nuggets!

Loving hut is the fastest growing international vegan chain restaurant, and they recently opened up a location near los angeles in alhambra. i checked it out over the weekend with my husband and we were both blown away by the excellence of the food, the size of the portions, and the friendliness of the staff. the best i can describe loving hut’s cuisine is as asian-inspired fast food with lots of fried selections, burgers, burritos and sandwiches as well as vegetable stir frys, spring rolls and noodle bowls. the place is very affordable and everything we tried was super tasty.
We started with the golden nuggets, which were basically huge chunks of seitan coated in bread crumbs and fried. they weren’t overly oily, and the coating was surprisingly light. the seitan was extra thick and wheat-meaty, and i gotta say these were quite possibly the best vegan nuggets i’ve ever had. they didn’t mess around with that fake “chicken” taste that most nuggets do, these just had a really excellent seitan flavor. not to mention the tangy mayo-style dipping sauce they came with, which was incredible!
My husband ordered the aulac special salad, which was a massive mound of cabbage covered in mock meat strips. the chickeny strips were delicious, and the shredded cabbage was crisp and fresh. definitely a win if you are looking for a really satisfying, yet healthy salad.
I ordered the teriyaki sub, a sandwich roll covered in vegan mayo and piled high with grilled soy meat, onions and tomatoes. this thing was so tasty—the fake steak was thick, juicy, and cooked in the most delicious teriyaki sauce. what a fucking great sandwich.
The food isn’t the only good thing about loving hut; the service is quick and attentive, there is ample parking, the restaurant is clean and spacious, and everything is very well-priced. we had such a pleasant experience there, i know i would be a regular if i lived in alhambra.
One last thing. apparently, loving hut is affiliated with the “supreme master”, and i’m not even sure exactly what that means, but it has stirred up quite the conversation. they did have supreme master television playing in the restaurant, which is basically a non-stop stream of cheezily produced pro-vegan programming. while some people accuse the organization of being “cultish”, it seemed harmless enough to me, and loving hut served up damn good vegan food, so i don’t really care about any of that other noise.
Go check out loving hut asap. there are tons of locations, so hopefully you live close enough to one to make the trip. and get the golden nuggets!

Another quality vegan restaurant. my only issue with it, is that it's ALL THE WAY in alhambra hah. the first time i spotted this restaurant, we were actually on our way to fossellman's ice cream shop (GO THERE). the workers were nice, soft-spoken vietnamese women. our waitress was very friendly and told us which drinks/entrees were popular. my boyfriend had the "queen's lunch" (lol) and i had the spicy mambo.
The queen's lunch was made predominantly out of mushrooms and yam flour. i don't know what they put in it, but it was damn tasty. along with my dinner, i ordered the rose milk tea. i was a bit weary of it, because i hate perfume-tasting flavors in my mouth. it was beautifully presented and tasty, with a slight perfume-taste haha. the only reason i ordered it was because someone on yelp was talking about how good it was. my bf had the kumquat drink. i would recommend that one to everyone. it was on ice, in a tall goblet, tasty, and refreshing. we wished they had refills!
I'd come here more often, if only there was a location near me. bummer.

My favorite thing at this place is definitely the Sea of Love
Sunday, May 03, 2009
|
|
I have to say that I really like their desserts. I've tried the carrot cake and the cheesecake, and both were very good and reasonably priced. I also like the rose milk tea, which surprised me because I'm usually not a fan of rose flavored things, but it was well presented in a large cup and delicious.
Originally, I came here after reading about the Ocean Basket. Although the contents of the basket are tasty (shrimp, fish, scallops, fries), I think they've priced it too high for what you get. (Also, it does not come in a basket, which I know for most of you will not be a big deal. But for a person like me who once had a love affair with shrimp baskets and fish 'n chips way before I was vegan, this was a bit of a disappointment.) I was a little dismayed by how they cut the faux shrimps in half so that at first you think you're getting 4, but really it's just 2 paltry shrimps. Similarly, with the fish and scallops, portions were skimpy. When the plate arrived on the table it looked huge, but it was actually mostly fries and hardly any ocean.
The beef teriyaki kabobs are worth every penny, and with six skewers on the plate, these beat out One World's kabobs for value. The chicken nuggets are a fine appetizer, and that sauce that they seem to serve with everything is actually quite good. I also enjoyed the Spicy Mambo, which was very reminiscent of fried scallops. But my favorite thing at this place is definitely the Sea of Love, which is fried enoki mushrooms wrapped in seaweed. There's even a little piece of soy ham tucked in the middle of the mushrooms to give it that extra something, though you can hardly taste the ham. Nevertheless, this dish was a stand-out for me because it reminded me so much of squid.
If you were ever a fan of fried seafood, I'd say skip the Ocean Basket (save your money) and just get the Sea of Love and the Spicy Mambo. You'll get more bang for your buck, plus lots of rice, salad and dressing, which come with both these plates.
One more thing. The service can be a little hit or miss. Don't be afraid to walk up to the counter to ask for things like more sauce, dessert or your check or you could be waiting for a long time. Sometimes they're really on top of it and sometimes they're not. I can't figure out why, though, since I've never seen the restaurant really full. But maybe they're still trying to figure things out and in a few more months, all the kinks will get worked out. Like with the Ocean Basket.

Truly a surprise! I used to love the Schezwan restaurant that occupied this place before they changed cooks, food went downhill, and then ultimately shut down.
My friend and I walked into Loving Hut with no idea it was a vegan/vegetarian restaurant. We need a couple more of those around here! Big props for opening one on Main Street in Alhambra.
We went for the Lunch Specials, which were cheap (all about under $6-$7). The soy Char Siu (BBQ Pork) tasted really good, and similar to the real thing. I've never had or seen it at other vegetarian restaurants.
We also tried the Jolly Rice, which was soy Chicken (similar to a croquette) with purple rice. The presentation was beautiful! The rice was decorated with seaweed and diced red pepper. The food was actually very tasty, full of flavor.
The portions run on the small size, which is the case with most vegan/vegetarian restaurants. My friend ordered the Pho, and it came with the most paltry dish of bean sprouts, mint, and lemon I've seen. Well, I guess one should conserve and not be wasteful, because the amount was JUST right.
So for the Lunch Specials, order 3 dishes for 2 people and it should be just enough. Order 2 dishes per a person if you guys are truly hungry!
Overall, Loving Hut was a delight. The food was fabulous. The ambiance and service was acceptable (the carnations on the tables cheapens the place for some reason...).. Great menu and selection.
Recommended and will return.

I tried this for the first time a couple weeks ago, and it was pretty decent. The portions are a good size at affordable prices, and the food's flavorful. I wouldn't recommend the appetizer drumsticks (kinda tasted like paper), but the Queen's Lunch & Cha Cha were tasty & filling. Not exceptionally healthy (a lotta fake meats), but it's a nice little treat nonetheless.
Oh, and the drinks are delicious!! Try the kiwi or the kumquat ones....very yummy! The carrot cake wasn't quite as good, but it was a big slice, if that matters at all...
I'll definitely go back to try out some of the other cornucopia-like entrees.

Delicious and Good Price Vegan Dishes

I finally visited this place. I brought my mom who is NOT a vegetarian. Our experience was mostly all positive. We ordered Spicy Mambo (fried mushrooms) that was very delicious. The texture of each nugget was like a scallop but it was actually a mushroom. The price of this dish is not low but considering the kind of mushrooms they use, I think it is reasonable. We were addicted to this dish and ate them all up. We asked for spicier dishes since my mom loves spicy food. The other dishes are cheaper. We ordered Bliss Chow Mien and I just love the taste of this fried noodle. My mom said that the fake meat in the noodle was good. We also ordered Eggplant Tofu (asked for spicier) and my mom just ate that with a gusto. I love to see her eating so much in a vegan restaurant. It's rare that she likes a vegetarian restaurant. Bravo to the chef! If she likes it then this restaurant passed the test to satisfy vegans or non-vegans alike.
I took Guru's Curry and vegan carrot cake home. The taste of the cake was good but I agree that it's kind of doughy or gummy.
The restaurant is CLEAN (restroom is clean), bright, and open. The atmosphere is very good. It's definitely the cleanest Asian restaurant we go to.
I will definitely go back again. Next time, I'll order the spicy cha cha.

I went to this place for lunch after seeing an ad in the LA Weekly and being so happy to find a veggie joint near my school. When I walked in and saw the "Supreme Master" Television going on, it immediately reminded me of One World in West Covina (which happens to be one of my favorite restaurants). So unfortunately for Loving Hut, I can't help but compare this place to One World.
The menu here had much of the same items as One World, they had some new interesting ones, but I felt like going for a good old veggie beef kabob. The food was good, the service was friendly, the place was very clean, but like I said, i couldn't help but think how much more I love One World. I could go into the reasons why, but why should I be picky? This place was great, I'll definitely be going back during my lunch breaks.

They are part of a chain that prides itself on healthy living, which I think is great. If you ever go to northern California, you can find their sister chains there. I've been here twice now, and I have to say it's one of the best places to go for vegan food on the east side. Was here with in March 09 with a friend. We came on a weekday for lunch and enjoyed our experience. The atmosphere of the restaurant is very causal and bright with many tables for seating. There were several other tables of customers while we were there, but it was not too busy - hopefully the restaurant can build a larger customer base with time.
My friend and I ordered several dishes to share. For our main meal, we enjoyed the spring rolls (has faux shrimp) that came with a sweet and salty peanut sauce (very good, $6), the slightly spicy royal noodle soup (delicious, $7), an order of teriyaki kabob (tasty but too salty, $6). We finished our meal with coffee and carrot cake (cake was fine and not too sweet, but the texture was a bit doughy for me, $3.50).
My only complaint is that the servers used Windex to clean tables while we and other customers were eating, and that smell bothered me personally.
Overall, our experience was positive. The entire staff was very courteous and friendly. I would definitely return to try some more of the other dishes. Please give Loving Hut your support when you are in the Alhambra area.

Very clean and well maintained
Tuesday, March 10, 2009

I found this place through the internet and was planning to stop by to check out the menu. I got the chance to sit down and have a quick bite. When you enter the door, you notice first the white chairs tucked under the white tables. Very clean and well maintained.
We sat down and ordered the Ocean Basket and Rose Lemonade. We weren't prepared to eat a full meal. The Ocean Basket consists of Fried Shrimp, Fried Scallops, Fried Fish Cutlets, and a center of French Fries. Yes, that's a lot of fried food but it was nothing that you would find at other restaurants. It was very good and came with vegan tartar sauce. The difference comes from the texture and flavor of the vegan food item used. All this food was washed down with the rose lemonade. This concoction was a blend of sweet, tangy lemonade and the refreshing aroma of rose syrup.
After talking with the store owner and chef, the reason why the food was different was because almost everything was imported from Taiwan. When you have been eating a lot of the faux meats and seafood, you notice differences among the vegan food distributors. The really good vegan faux foods come from Taiwan where they have done ALOT of research on texture and flavor. For instance, when you eat the Fried Veggie Scallops you actually notice that it's scallops in a faint reminescence. (I wasn't all veggie before). The vegan shrimp is softer than other rubbery competitors.
This was only the first visit but definitely not the last. I was very impressed with the menu and will be coming back to experience everything on the menu.
One more thing. The cheesecake is amazing! I've tried vegan cheesecake from Real Food Daily and this one topped the charts. Sometimes vegan places would make cheesecake with the consistency of tofu...bland, over-sweetened, and spongy-wet. This cheesecake is rich, tangy, and sweet enough not to kill your senses. This comes so very close to a real cheesecake that it's scary. You'll notice how much work it takes to create a cheesecake without real cheese.

The menu includes a variety of authentic vegan Vietnamese, Chinese, and Western entrees, as well as many choices of exotic and creative vegan drinks. My favorites so far are the Spicy Cha Cha, the Spaghetti, and the Rose Milk Tea - they are SOOO GOOD, you've got to try them, and I'm sure the list will continue to grow as I go back and try more things.
The entire place is newly remodeled with an elegant and stylish design, which offers a truly pleasant dining experience. They also have 2 large flat screen TVs on the sides of the wall showing satellite TV programs throughout - now how's that for getting the biggest bang out of the buck!
One other plus is that it is conveniently located next to an Edwards movie theater, a few blocks of car dealerships, shopping plaza, and even a car wash around the corner. So whether it's the movies, shopping, or getting your car cleaned, you can always feel comforted that great yummy vegan food is just close by.

bright and very loving

I agree with Ray F. This was a very interesting restaurant. The interior decor is bright and very "loving."
I came here with my sister. We ordered the heavenly salad, a fried rice, and a deep fried mushroom assortment.
The wait staff was very accommodating, granted we were the only table being served at the time. As for prices, everything averaged around $7 a plate, so this place won't break the bank. Overall, it was just ok, I don't think I will return though.

This is quite a unique Vegan Restaurant, their foods seem to be a combination of Vietnamese, Western, Pan Asian tastes such as PHO, Royal noodle, golden rolls (Vietnamese taste), Curry blend in with India spicy flavor, Hamburger, Spaghetti carry American & Western flavor.
However, their food are very good and there are many colorful& tasty drinks that hard to find somewhere else, plus waitress are very polite manner.
I would recommend this restaurant due to their reasonable price and clean with full warm atmosphere place.

The menu has raw vegan salads, noodle bowl soups, a variety of stir-frys with different, colorful vegetables and your choice of tofu or unusual mockmeats. Part of a growing international chain of vegan restaurants.

Go ahead! Try the Loving Hut!

My band's guitarist, knowing of my vegan heathen ways, gave me a menu from this place a few weeks ago. With a name like "Loving Hut," you know I had to try it, just to tell people I ate at the Loving Hut. It's a restaurant and an innuendo in one. That is automatically one star in the wonderful world of Melody's Warped Little Brain.
The place is cute. Very clean, with a cheery yellow-and-white decor and an equally cheery waitress. The bathrooms are spotless, and there's free parking in the back (heh. I like that innuendo, too). There are environmentally-and-spiritually-progressive framed quotes (often framed with flowers and plants) all over the place, which makes for a fun read while you wait for your meal. If the quotes aren't doing it for you, you can always watch the big, flat-screen TV. I don't understand why people put TV's in restaurants, but there you have it. In any case, they were playing a video about the impact of global warming and the benefits of vegetarianism. An excellent sentiment, but even as a very pro-environment vegan, it's a little disconcerting to have to listen to that while I'm eating.
The menu is heavy on the deep-fried foods and meat analogs. I get why-- these things taste good, and are what people unfamiliar with vegan food would generally gravitate towards. Still, it'd be nice to have a few healthier options on there as well, and at least a few items with more actual vegetables in them. My friend and I shared a plate of fresh spring rolls-- a pretty big order (6 halves) filled with rice noodles, veggies, faux shrimp, and faux ham, served with a thick peanut sauce. It's hard to mess up a fresh spring roll, and Loving Hut definitely did not mess these up. Yum.
My friend ordered the fried rice, which had a small amount of finely chopped veggies and a larger amount of fried tofu and fake ham in it. We had kinda hoped it would have more veggies and be made with brown rice. But for what it was, it was tasty.
I got the Happy Barbeque, which was garnished with a few slices of tomato and two cucumber slices shaped into a heart (aw). It came with rice and a sweet-ish tangy sauce. It was good, but again, woulda liked more veggies with it.
The drinks menu had a bunch of interesting things on it (Kumquat juice?! Cool!!). I got rose cappuccino, which came out hot and foamy with hearts made of rose syrup and some rose petals and a little rose bud decorating the top. It was so pretty I almost didn't want to drink it. But I did. And it was interesting. I think I ruined it by putting in too much sweetener; it would have been fine as it was. It was an interesting mix of coffee and rose flavours, and I'd probably order it again (and not sweeten it). It felt like I was getting romanced. Nice.
We shared a tofu cheesecake after lunch (yeah, go ahead, twist my arm, make me eat dessert). It had raspberry topping and was awesome. Tofu cheesecake is dubious. Some places do it amazingly, and some places pretty much cut a block of tofu into a triangle and give it to you. This place does tofu cheesecake right. Yumm-o. I like it. Hooray!
So, to recap: Clean. Friendly. Decent food served gorgeously. Great cheesecake. Romantic coffee. Needs more vegetables and brown rice. Awesome name.
Go ahead. Try the Loving Hut.
Yeah, baby. That's what she said.

very interesting restaurant

This is a very interesting restaurant. From the outside, you really don't know what kind of restaurant it's suppose to be. . Curiously, we went in today and found out that they are a vegan/vegetarian restaurant. Menu is mostly asian/fusion vegetarian food, from Pho to veggie burger. The decor is very yellow with a huge heart like logo in the ceiling in the middle of the room. The waitresses were extremely nice and friendly, and believe it or not, they claimed to be volunteers working there. They have a mission which is to promote veganism. Looks like this place is connected to some kind of spiritual cult from the programs they show on the LCD TVs. I asked one of the waitresses if they were a non-profit organization, but she refused to answer.
Since my kid likes noodles, we ordered Vietnamese Pho and Wonton Noodle Soup. We also tried their Fried Tofu and Stir-fry Kidney with basil. The food were quite flavorful. Their prices was quite reasonable also. Overall, it's hard to find a restaurant with a mission to promote a heathy lifestyle in this area. Is this just another "Go Green/Save the planet" theme or they are serious about their mission? I'll let you find out.
